On Sunday, the State Council's food safety office, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a joint statement, directing local authorities to investigate and handle the matter swiftly and strictly in accordance with the law. They also ordered nationwide spot checks and market inspections of cabbages and other perishable vegetables, warning that any violations would be punished severely.

The case came to light on Saturday when a blogger posted a video showing multiple trucks loaded with cabbages in Kangbao county, Zhangjiakou, all of which appeared to have been dipped in formaldehyde before shipment.
The Kangbao county government issued a statement the same day confirming that a preliminary investigation had verified the video's authenticity. The practice was identified as an illegal act by purchasers seeking to preserve vegetables during transport.
